Submission guidelines for contributed technical articles & calculation formulas

Last updated: November 2026

FlowEngineer accepts two kinds of contributed content from practising engineers, specifiers, researchers, and field specialists working in industrial valves, pumps, and flow control:

Track A — Technical Articles & Papers

Original engineering write-ups: failure analyses, selection methodology, standards interpretation, field case studies, materials & corrosion notes, industry news analysis.

  • Length: 1,200–3,000 words
  • Depth: cite standards clauses, give numerical examples
  • Format: Markdown or Google Doc

Track B — Calculation Formulas

Engineering calculation formulas with worked inputs, cited source (calculation book / standard), and full derivation. We turn adopted ones into browser-based calculators on the tools page.

  • Format: formula + 1 worked example + standard reference
  • Audit: we reproduce your result against the cited source
  • Output: live calculator page with your byline

Two tracks, one rule: when your submission is adopted and published, you receive a backlink from your byline. There is no financial compensation in either direction — we don't pay for content, and contributors don't pay for publication. For advertising and sponsored promotional posts, see §8.

1. Topics We Welcome

On-topic

2. Automatic Declines (Editorial Track)

Please don't send as editorial submissions

3. Byline & Attribution

You choose how to be credited on a published article or calculator. Both are accepted:

Company-affiliated contributors must disclose their employer in the cover email (see §5.4). Editorial articles may not promote a specific product or model — promotional coverage goes through the sponsored post track instead.

4. Compensation Model — Backlink, No Money

There is no financial compensation in either direction. FlowEngineer does not pay contributors for articles or formulas, and contributors do not pay FlowEngineer for publication or backlinks. This is a content-for-link exchange, transparently disclosed. We do not accept payment in exchange for dofollow backlinks — that would violate Google's link spam policy and put both our sites at risk.

For the avoidance of doubt: if anyone offers to pay you to publish content on FlowEngineer, or asks you to pay us for a backlink, that is not us — report it to flowengin.info@gmail.com.

5. Submission Requirements

5.1 Originality

Your submission must be your own work and not previously published, in part or in whole, on any other site (including your personal blog or LinkedIn). Quoted standards text must be cited with clause numbers, not reproduced beyond fair-use excerpts.

5.2 Technical accuracy

Every numerical claim, formula, and standards reference must be verifiable. For Track B (calculations), we will reproduce your formula from the cited source and confirm the result. Discrepancies are flagged back to you for resolution before publication.

5.3 AI use disclosure

AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot) may be used for drafting, language polishing, translation, and structural outlining. You must declare in your cover email which tool was used and for what (e.g. "Claude 3.5 was used to polish the introduction; all formulas and numerical examples are my own"). Every technical figure, formula, standards reference, and engineering conclusion must have been verified by you, a named human, before submission. Raw AI output passed off as human work will be rejected.

5.4 Conflicts of interest

If you work for a valve / pump manufacturer, distributor, or service provider, that is fine — many of our best contributors do. Disclose it in your cover email. Editorial articles may cover your employer's product category generically but may not promote a specific product or model. Promotional coverage of a specific product goes through the sponsored post track (§8), with clear labeling.

5.5 Copyright & licensing

Contributors retain copyright to their original work. By publishing on FlowEngineer, you grant us a non-exclusive worldwide licence to publish, edit for clarity, and distribute the article in perpetuity, in both English and translated form. You may republish your own article on your personal blog or LinkedIn 30 days after FlowEngineer publication, with a canonical link back to the original.

6. How to Submit

Step 1 — Send a pitch first

Email flowengin.info@gmail.com with the subject line [PITCH] — <your topic> for Track A or [FORMULA] — <calculation name> for Track B. A pitch is a short email (200–400 words) containing:

Pitch template Subject: [PITCH] — Stem torque drift on trunnion ball valves after 5 years in sour service or [FORMULA] — Bolt load calculation per ASME B16.5 Track: A (article) or B (formula) Topic: One-sentence summary. Why now: Why this matters to FlowEngineer readers. Your angle: What's different vs. existing online content. Worked example / data: Specific calculation or case you'll walk through. Length & format: ~2,000 words, Markdown, 3 diagrams. Standards cited: API 6D, ASME B16.34, NACE MR0175. Byline preference: Individual (Jane Doe) / Company (Acme Valve) / Anonymous. Backlink target: URL you want linked from your bio. Your background: 1–2 sentences on your engineering experience. AI use: Claude used for language polish; all torque calculations are mine. Conflicts: I work at [Company]; article is vendor-neutral.

Step 2 — Wait for our response

We reply to every pitch within 7 business days. If yes, you'll get a deadline (typically 3–6 weeks), a target length, and any scope adjustments. If no, we'll tell you why — you're free to pitch a revised angle.

Step 3 — Submit the draft

Send the completed draft as Markdown or Google Doc link in the same email thread. Include figures as attachments (or Drive / Dropbox link) and your final AI use disclosure line.

Step 4 — Editorial review

We do a technical pass (formula verification, standards clause checks, numerical cross-check), a clarity pass (structure, headings, intro), and a copy pass. You'll see tracked changes and have 5 business days to respond. We do not publish without your sign-off on the final version.

Step 5 — Publication & backlink goes live

Articles publish on the FlowEngineer blog or in the knowledge base. Adopted formulas become live calculators on the tools page. Your backlink goes live at the same time as publication, and you'll get the final URL at least 48 hours before it goes live.

7. Editorial Standards & AI Use Policy

FlowEngineer AI Use Policy (contributed content)

Contributed articles and formulas go through the same technical audit as in-house content. For calculation submissions, we will reproduce at least one formula from the cited source calculation book (when available) and confirm the article's result.

8. Advertising & Sponsored Posts

We accept advertising and sponsored content inquiries

FlowEngineer accepts a limited number of commercial placements alongside editorial content. Available formats:

All advertising and sponsored content is clearly disclosed per Google's ad disclosure guidelines and FTC requirements. Sponsored posts carry visible "Sponsored by [Company]" labeling in the byline and article header.

Link attribute policy: All paid ad links and sponsored post links use rel="sponsored noopener" per Google's link attribute policy. If you want a dofollow backlink, that's the editorial contribution track (§4) — submit a genuine technical article or formula, not an ad buy. We do not sell dofollow links under any circumstances.

To discuss advertising, sponsored posts, or promotional article placements — email flowengin.info@gmail.com with subject [ADVERTISING] inquiry. Include your company, product or topic, target pages or categories, and intended campaign length. We reply within 2 business days with availability, rates, and placement options.

9. Contact

Questions not answered here? Email flowengin.info@gmail.com — typical response within 2 business days. For ongoing contributor relationships or a series of articles, mention "recurring contributor" in the subject line.
