Double-Offset Butterfly Valve (High-Performance Butterfly Valve)
General / GeneralDefinition
A double-offset butterfly valve (commonly called a high-performance butterfly valve, or HPBV) positions the disc shaft offset from both the disc centerline and the pipe centerline. The first offset displaces the shaft behind the disc face, and the second offset moves the shaft off the pipe centerline. These two offsets create a camming action: as the disc opens, it lifts away from the seat immediately, reducing rubbing contact to a brief moment at the closed position. This minimal friction enables tight metal-to-metal seating and extends seat life dramatically compared to concentric butterfly valves.
Working Principle
The first offset (shaft behind the disc sealing face) ensures that the disc does not slide across the seat during most of its rotation — it cams away instead. The second offset (shaft offset from the pipe center) creates an elliptical rotation path that further reduces seating interference. The combined effect: the disc contacts the seat only during the last few degrees of closing and separates within the first few degrees of opening. This near-zero friction design allows PTFE, metal, or fire-safe composite seats to survive thousands of cycles without the wear that plagues concentric butterfly valves.
Key Components
| Disc | Eccentrically mounted; camming action minimizes seat contact |
| Shaft (stem) | Offset in two planes relative to disc and pipe centerline |
| Seat ring | PTFE, RPTFE, or metal; retained in the body or cartridge |
| Body | Wafer or lug pattern; carbon steel or stainless |
| Bearings | Upper and lower shaft bearings reduce operating torque |
| Packing | Graphite or PTFE stem seal at the shaft exit |
| Actuator / Handle | Lever, gear, or powered actuator |
Types & Variants
| Seat Type | Material | Pressure Class | Temperature Range | Leakage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soft seat (PTFE/RPTFE) | PTFE, RPTFE, PEEK | Class 150–300 | -50 to 500°F | Zero (FCI Class VI) |
| Metal seat | 316SS + Stellite overlay | Class 150–600 | -50 to 1000°F+ | FCI Class IV/V |
| Fire-safe seat | Soft primary + metal backup | Class 150–300 | -50 to 500°F | Zero (normal) / Class IV (post-fire) |
Materials
Carbon steel (A216 WCB) body for oil, gas, and water in general industrial service. Stainless steel (A351 CF8M) for chemical and marine applications. Nickel alloys (Hastelloy, Monel) for specialty corrosive services. Disc: same as body or 316SS with Stellite seat edge for metal-seated versions. Shaft: 17-4PH or 410SS for strength and corrosion resistance. Seats: RPTFE (15% glass-filled) for general service, PEEK for high temperature and chemical resistance, 316SS with Stellite overlay for metal-seated designs.
Applicable Standards
API 609 Category B (double-offset butterfly valves), MSS SP-68 (high-pressure butterfly valves), MSS SP-89 (butterfly valve actuators). Fire testing per API 607. ASME B16.34 for pressure ratings. Face-to-face per API 609 or MSS SP-68. ISO 15848-1 for fugitive emissions testing.
Applications
Oil and gas production and processing: isolation on gathering lines, separator outlets, and gas compression stations. Refinery process piping: hydrocarbon isolation on crude distillation units, catalytic crackers, and hydrotreaters. Petrochemical: ethylene and propylene processing at moderate temperatures. Power generation: cooling water isolation, condensate, and low-pressure steam. HVAC: large-diameter chilled and hot water isolation where the compact, lightweight design saves space and cost compared to gate valves.
Advantages
- Camming action minimizes seat wear — thousands of cycles without seat replacement
- Metal seating option for high-temperature and fire-safe service
- Compact, lightweight — 1/3 the weight and face-to-face of a gate valve
- Higher pressure rating than concen
