Middle East Desalination Pipeline Drives Major Valve Order Flow

Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt have an unprecedented roster of seawater desalination projects in delivery, generating sustained demand for duplex and super duplex valves.

Middle East Desalination Pipeline Drives Major Valve Order Flow

The desalination construction pipeline across the Middle East and North Africa has reached record scale, and the valve supply chain is one of its clearest beneficiaries. Saudi Arabia's national water strategy, the UAE's continued expansion of reverse osmosis capacity, and new projects in Egypt, Oman and Morocco together represent tens of billions of dollars in plant investment.

Corrosion resistance is the whole game

Seawater reverse osmosis plants are among the most corrosive environments in civilian industry. Chloride levels near saturation, combined with continuous operation and pressure up to 80 bar in the high-pressure section, make material selection the central engineering decision. Duplex and super duplex stainless steels dominate the specification for wetted valves, with titanium appearing in the most aggressive high-pressure services.

Valve types concentrate around large-diameter butterfly valves for low-pressure intake and outfall lines, high-pressure ball and globe valves for membrane feed, and engineered check valves on pump discharge where water hammer control is critical.

What it means for buyers

Demand for super duplex castings has tightened availability worldwide. Buyers on non-desalination projects that specify 5A or 6A duplex materials are seeing longer quotes and higher premiums, and several foundries report order books extending well into 2027.

  • Super duplex castings are the tightest supply position in the valve market
  • Butterfly, ball and engineered check valves carry most desalination volume
  • Projects are qualifying suppliers earlier to secure material slots

Manufacturers with proven desalination references and in-house duplex casting capability are commanding both premium prices and priority slots — a position that looks durable as long as the regional construction pipeline holds.

Capacity additions across the region

The project list is long and specific. Saudi Arabia continues rolling out large reverse-osmosis plants under its national water company, each with valve packages measured in the thousands. The UAE has paired new capacity with life-extension of existing plants, doubling the maintenance demand alongside new-build orders. Egypt, Oman and Morocco are each executing multiple plants with international developers, and Jordan's ambitious program adds further volume. Because these projects run on similar technology and specifications, suppliers can serve several with one product platform — a scale efficiency that rewards manufacturers who qualify early and maintain regional stock. Local content requirements are increasingly part of tenders, pushing international brands toward assembly partnerships in the region.

Lessons for material specification

Every project cycle re-learns the same materials lessons, and specifications are gradually absorbing them. Super duplex performs excellently in seawater but demands disciplined heat treatment and proper ferrite control; cheap castings that skip these steps have failed in service and blacklisted suppliers. Titanium remains unmatched in the most aggressive high-pressure services but its cost confines it to where metallurgy cannot compromise. Coated carbon steel survives in selected duties and keeps budgets honest where super duplex is overkill. The buyers achieving lowest lifetime cost are those who specify by measured corrosion exposure rather than by habit — and who audit foundry process control as carefully as they audit final test certificates.
