Cast Valve Body Wall Thickness

Estimate the minimum wall thickness of a cast valve body (e.g. gate, globe, check, ball) using design pressure, bore size and the casting quality factor. Based on ASME B16.34 / MSS-SP methodology commonly used for valve body wall checks.

🔗 About This Calculation

For cast valve bodies, the minimum wall thickness depends on the design pressure, the internal bore, the material allowable stress and a casting quality factor (E) that accounts for typical porosity in cast components. The simplified formula below is widely used for body wall checks when no detailed FEA is available.

t = (P · D) / (2 · S · E − 1.2 · P) + C

Where: P = design pressure, D = bore diameter, S = allowable stress, E = casting quality factor (0.80–1.00), C = corrosion allowance.
