V-Port Ball Valve (V-Ball Valve)
General / GeneralDefinition
A V-port ball valve (V-ball valve) has a V-shaped notch cut into the ball instead of a round bore. As the ball rotates, the V-notch gradually opens or closes, creating a characterized (non-linear) flow profile that is far more predictable and controllable than the on/off snap action of a standard ball valve. This design bridges the gap between isolation ball valves and control valves, providing both shutoff capability and throttling precision in a single, compact body.
Working Principle
The V-notch in the ball acts as a variable-area orifice. At small openings, the flow area changes slowly with rotation, giving fine control near the closed position. As the ball rotates further, the flow area increases progressively. The result is an equal-percentage or modified-linear flow characteristic, depending on the exact V-notch geometry. The V-edge also shears through fibrous and stringy media that would clog a globe valve seat, making V-ball valves effective on pulp stock, wastewater sludge, and similar difficult fluids.
Key Components
| V-notched ball | Ball with a V-shaped notch; 30°, 60°, 90°, or custom angle |
| Seat rings | Metal or soft seats; designed for throttling wear resistance |
| Stem | Connects actuator to ball; typically splined for precise positioning |
| Body | Same construction as standard ball valve; split-body or one-piece |
| Actuator | Pneumatic or electric actuator with positioner for modulating control |
| Positioner | Converts control signal to precise ball rotation angle |
| Bearing | Supports the ball and reduces operating torque |
Types & Variants
| V-Angle | Flow Characteristic | Turndown | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30° V-notch | Very fine control near closed | High (100:1+) | Precision dosing, small flow modulation |
| 60° V-notch | Equal-percentage curve | Moderate (50:1) | General process control, chemical injection |
| 90° V-notch | Near-linear flow increase | Lower (25:1) | Large flow applications, pulp & paper |
Materials
Carbon steel bodies (A216 WCB) for general process. Stainless steel (CF8M/F316) for corrosive chemicals, food, and pharma. Ball and seat materials determine throttling life: 316SS with Stellite 6 overlay for metal-seated control, RPTFE or PEEK for clean services at moderate temperature. In pulp and paper, 316SS bodies with 17-4PH or 440C balls handle abrasive slurries. Seat materials in severe service use tungsten carbide coatings.
Applicable Standards
API 608 (ball valves), IEC 60534 (control valve standards for sizing and characterization), ASME B16.34 (pressure ratings). V-ball valves used as control valves should be sized per ISA-75.01 (control valve sizing equations). Fire-safe per API 607/6FA when required.
Applications
Pulp and paper mills: V-ball valves control stock consistency, chip washing, and bleaching chemical dosing where fibrous media would plug conventional globe control valves. Chemical processing: precise reagent injection and pH control where equal-percentage characteristics match the process gain. Wastewater treatment: sludge recirculation and polymer dosing with shearing action that prevents stringy material buildup. Oil and gas: produced water treatment and chemical injection systems. Food processing: sanitary V-ball valves on viscous product flow control.
Advantages
- Characterized flow curve — true throttling capability, not just on/off
- V-edge shears through fibrous and stringy media — resists clogging
- Higher Cv per body size than globe control valves
- Tight shutoff when closed — dual function (isolation + control)
- Equal-percentage characteristic matches many process non-linearities
Disadvantages
- Higher cost than standard ball valves (V-ball machining + actuator + positioner) <
