Spring-Loaded Safety Valves

Valve Standards / GB/GB-T Chinese National Standards

What Is a Spring-Loaded Safety Valves

A spring-loaded safety valves is a pressure-relief device designed to open automatically when system pressure exceeds a predetermined set point, discharging fluid to prevent equipment damage or catastrophic failure. Once the pressure returns to a safe level, the valve re-closes, restoring normal operation.

These valves serve as the last line of defense against overpressure events caused by process upsets, external fire, cooling system failure, or operator error. Their reliable operation is critical to plant safety and is governed by strict engineering codes and regulatory requirements.

Working Principle

When system pressure remains below the set point, a spring holds the valve disc tightly against the seat, maintaining a leak-tight seal. As pressure rises and approaches the set point, the disc begins to lift slightly. At the set pressure, the disc reaches full lift, and the valve discharges at its rated capacity.

Spring-loaded designs use a calibrated compression spring to set the opening pressure. Pilot-operated designs use system pressure acting on a pilot to control the main valve, providing tighter seat sealing at operating pressures close to the set point and higher capacity at lower overpressure.

After the overpressure event subsides and system pressure drops below the blowdown setting, the valve re-closes. Proper blowdown adjustment ensures the valve closes promptly without chattering or leaking.

Types and Variants

TypeCharacteristicsBest For
Spring-Loaded (Conventional)Spring holds disc; backpressure affects set pointGeneral service, atmospheric discharge
Balanced BellowsBellows isolates spring from backpressure; set point stableClosed systems, variable backpressure
Pilot-OperatedPilot controls main valve; tight at high operating ratiosHigh-capacity systems, operating close to set point
Weight-Loaded / LeverDead weight on lever; simple, no springLow-pressure steam, legacy systems

Sizing and Set Pressure

Proper sizing of a spring-loaded safety valves requires calculating the required relieving capacity based on the worst-case overpressure scenario. Common scenarios include:

Set pressure is typically set at or below the Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP) of the protected equipment. Per API 520, accumulated pressure must not exceed 110% of MAWP for a single valve (116% for fire case). Sizing calculations follow the API 520 / API 521 or ASME Section VIII methodologies.

Selection Guide

When specifying a spring-loaded safety valves, consider these critical factors:

Always consult the valve manufacturer's published pressure-temperature ratings and technical data sheets for the specific size, material, and class being considered. Generic tables provide guidance only.
