Sanitary Check Valve

Specialty Valves / Sanitary Valve

What Is a Sanitary Check Valve

A sanitary check valve is an automatic valve that permits flow in one direction only, preventing reverse flow (backflow) in piping systems. It operates without external actuation, relying instead on the differential pressure of the flowing medium to open the valve and the force of reverse flow or gravity to close it.

Check valves are essential in virtually every piping system where backflow could cause equipment damage, process contamination, or safety hazards. They protect pumps from reverse rotation, prevent drainage of elevated piping, and maintain prime in suction lines.

Working Principle

The sanitary check valve relies on the kinetic energy of forward flow to push the closure element (disc, ball, piston, or flap) away from the seat, allowing passage. When forward flow stops or reverses, gravity, spring force, or backpressure pushes the closure element back onto the seat, sealing the valve.

The speed of closure is critical: too slow, and reverse flow can cause water hammer; too fast, and the sudden stop of flow can also generate pressure surges. Different check valve designs balance these factors through their geometry and spring selection.

No external actuator or power source is needed. This automatic operation makes check valves inherently fail-safe: if flow tries to reverse, the valve closes by default.

Types and Variants

TypeCharacteristicsBest For
Swing CheckHinged disc swings open; low pressure dropWater, oil, general service
Lift Check (Piston)Piston lifts vertically; tight sealHigh-pressure steam, gas
Ball CheckFree ball lifts off seat; simple designSmall bore, low-pressure systems
Wafer / Dual-PlateTwo spring-loaded discs; compact, fast closurePump protection, HVAC
Tilting DiscDisc tilts open; faster closure than swingPump discharge, pulsating flow
Nozzle / Axial FlowSpring-loaded disc in axial flow path; very fast closureTurbine extraction, critical backflow prevention
Silent CheckSpring-loaded disc with short stroke; eliminates slamPump discharge, water hammer prevention

Materials and Pressure Ratings

MaterialStandardTypical Service
Carbon Steel (WCB, WCC)ASTM A216Non-corrosive fluids, oil and gas, steam below 427 C
Stainless Steel (CF8, CF8M)ASTM A351Corrosive media, chemical, food and pharma
Alloy Steel (WC6, WC9, C12A)ASTM A217High-temperature steam, power plants
Duplex Stainless (CD3MN)ASTM A890Offshore, seawater, chloride service
Cast Iron / Ductile IronASTM A126 / A395Waterworks, low-pressure HVAC
Bronze / BrassASTM B62 / B584Marine, low-pressure water service
Nickel Alloys (Inconel, Hastelloy)VariousHighly corrosive, high-temperature service

Pressure ratings follow ASME B16.34 class designations: Class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500. The allowable pressure at a given temperature is determined by the material group and class. For specific ratings, consult ASME B16.34 pressure-temperature tables.

Selection Guide

When specifying a sanitary check valve, consider these critical factors:

Always consult the valve manufacturer's published pressure-temperature ratings and technical data sheets for the specific size, material, and class being considered. Generic tables provide guidance only.
