Forged Steel Gate Valve

Valves / Gate Valve

A forged steel gate valve is a compact, high-integrity shut-off valve produced from forged steel billets, typically used in small-bore (1/2″ to 2″) high-pressure and high-temperature piping systems in power plants, refineries, and petrochemical facilities.

Working Principle

Like any gate valve, the forged steel variant uses a wedge gate that moves perpendicular to the flow path. Forged construction eliminates porosity and inclusions found in castings, yielding a denser, more uniform grain structure. The valve typically features a bolted bonnet or pressure seal bonnet design, rising or non-rising stem, and a flexible or solid wedge. Because the body is forged, wall thickness can be reduced while maintaining pressure integrity, resulting in a lighter, more compact valve compared to its cast equivalent at the same pressure class.

Key Components

Forged body, bonnet (bolted or pressure seal), wedge gate (solid, flexible, or split), stem, seat rings, packing, handwheel or gear operator.

Common Materials

ASTM A105 (carbon steel forging) is the default for ambient to moderate temperature service. For high-temperature applications, ASTM A182 F11 (1.25Cr-0.5Mo) or F22 (2.25Cr-1Mo) is common. For corrosive or low-temperature service, ASTM A182 F304/F316 stainless steel forgings apply. Low-temperature carbon steel follows ASTM A350 LF2.

Advantages & Disadvantages

Advantages

  • Superior mechanical integrity due to forged grain structure
  • Compact and lighter than equivalent cast valves
  • Excellent for high-pressure and high-temperature duty
  • Wide material availability for corrosive and low-temperature service

Disadvantages

  • Size range limited — typically NPS 2 and below (API 602 scope)
  • Higher unit cost than cast equivalent for larger sizes
  • Not suitable for throttling service
  • Socket weld ends create crevice corrosion risk in corrosive media

FAQ

What pressure classes do forged steel gate valves cover?

API 602 covers Classes 150, 300, 600, 800, 1500, and 2500. Class 800 is specific to forged valves and not covered by ASME B16.34.

Forged vs cast gate valve — when to choose forged?

Choose forged when the size is NPS 2 or smaller and the pressure is Class 600 or higher. Forged material has no porosity and is easier to NDE (non-destructive examine), making it safer for high-stress small-bore applications.
