Eccentric Plug Valve

Valves / Plug Valve

An eccentric plug valve has the plug shaft offset from the body centerline so the plug lifts off the seat before rotating, eliminating sliding friction for extended seat life and providing reliable shut-off for wastewater, sludge, and abrasive applications where conventional valves fail prematurely.

Working Principle

The plug shaft is offset (eccentric) from both the seat centerline and the body centerline. This offset creates a camming action: when the valve begins to open, the plug lifts off the seat first, then rotates to the open position. When closing, the plug rotates back into alignment, then cams down onto the seat. This lift-then-turn motion eliminates the sliding contact between plug and seat that causes wear in concentric plug and gate valves. The eccentric design is particularly beneficial for abrasive and dirty service because the plug does not grind debris against the seat during operation. Resilient seat materials (Buna-N, EPDM, Viton, PTFE) provide bubble-tight shut-off.

Key Components

Body (typically flow-over design), eccentric plug, resilient seat, shaft (offset), bearings, packing gland, handwheel or actuator.

Common Materials

Body: ASTM A216 WCB or A351 CF8M. Plug: ductile iron with Buna-N or EPDM coating, or 316SS with hard-facing. Seat: Buna-N, EPDM, Viton, PTFE, or metal (Stellite). Shaft: 316SS. Bearings: self-lubricating bronze or polymer.

Advantages & Disadvantages

Advantages

  • Camming action eliminates seat sliding wear
  • Handles dirty, abrasive, and fibrous fluids better than any other valve type
  • Resilient seats provide bubble-tight shut-off
  • Lower operating torque than lubricated plug valves (no sealant needed)
  • Available with V-port for throttling service

Disadvantages

  • Not as widely available as ball or gate valves — fewer manufacturers
  • Resilient seats limit temperature range (Buna-N: 80°C, Viton: 200°C, metal: higher)
  • Eccentric design creates slightly higher pressure drop than full-port ball valves
  • Seat replacement requires removing the plug from the body
  • Higher cost than wafer butterfly valves for equivalent water service

FAQ

Eccentric plug vs lubricated plug valve?

Eccentric plug does not need sealant (resilient seat, cam action). Lubricated plug requires periodic grease injection for sealing. Eccentric is better for dirty/abrasive service; lubricated is better for high-pressure gas where metal-to-metal seal with sealant is required.

Can an eccentric plug valve be used for throttling?

Yes, with V-port plug design. The V-shaped port provides a good flow characteristic for throttling wastewater, slurry, and other dirty fluids. Do not use a straight-through eccentric plug for continuous throttling — the full-port design creates high-velocity jet impingement on the seat.
