API 600 - Steel Gate Valve Standard
General / GeneralDefinition
API 600 is the primary international standard for flanged and butt-welded steel gate valves used in petroleum and natural gas industries. It specifies design requirements, minimum wall thicknesses, seat ring and stem dimensions, material requirements, and testing procedures for gate valves in sizes NPS 1 through 24 and pressure classes 150 through 2500. Virtually every steel gate valve specified in the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries is manufactured to API 600, making it one of the most widely referenced valve standards in the world.
Working Principle
API 600 is not a 'how it works' standard — it is a dimensional and material specification. It ensures that a gate valve labeled 'API 600 Class 300 6-inch' from any manufacturer worldwide meets the same minimum requirements for wall thickness, stem diameter, seat ring dimensions, and body-to-bonnet joint design. This interchangeability allows engineers to specify valves by standard designation rather than by individual manufacturer's catalog numbers. The standard's wall thickness requirements are more conservative than ASME B16.34, providing extra corrosion allowance and structural integrity for refinery and petrochemical service.
Types & Variants
| Requirement | API 600 Specifies | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum wall thickness | Thicker than ASME B16.34 | Extra corrosion allowance for refinery service |
| Stem diameter | Minimum based on valve size and class | Prevents stem failure under operating torque |
| Seat ring dimensions | Minimum cross-section and attachment method | Prevents seat ring blowout and ensures replaceability |
| Body-to-bonnet joint | Minimum bolting and gasket requirements | Ensures pressure boundary integrity |
| Material requirements | Body, bonnet, stem, and seating material grades | Matches ASTM specifications for pressure components |
| Pressure testing | Shell and seat test per API 598 | Verifies pressure boundary and seat tightness |
Materials
API 600 specifies material grades by ASTM specification number. Body and bonnet: A216 WCB/WCC (carbon steel), A217 WC6/WC9 (chrome-moly for high temperature), A351 CF8/CF8M/CF3/CF3M (stainless steel). Stem: A182 F6a (13Cr), A182 F304/F316 (stainless). Seat ring: same material as body or harder alloy. Wedge: same material as body with seat facing (Stellite, 13Cr). The standard requires material traceability and certification per ASTM specifications.
Applicable Standards
API 600 is the governing standard. It references API 598 (Valve Inspection and Testing) for shell and seat testing requirements. ASME B16.34 provides pressure-temperature ratings. ASME B16.10 defines face-to-face and end-to-end dimensions. ASME B16.5 covers flanged end dimensions. API 607/6FA covers fire testing. API 602 covers compact forged gate valves (smaller sizes, different wall thickness).
Applications
API 600 gate valves are the default specification for isolation duties in petroleum refineries, natural gas processing plants, petrochemical facilities, and offshore production platforms. They serve on crude oil, natural gas, NGL, sour service (with NACE MR0175 compliance), steam, water, and general hydrocarbon services. Engineers specify API 600 when they need a robust, conservatively-designed gate valve with predictable dimensions and proven reliability. For small forged valves (2 inch and below), API 602 is the appropriate standard instead. Procurement teams shortlisting suppliers for these duties often start from an independent gate valve manufacturer directory before narrowing the list by API 600 compliance.
Advantages
- Global standard recognized and used worldwide — interchangeability across manufacturers
- Conservative wall thickness provides extra corrosion allowance beyond ASME B16.34
- Comprehensive specification covers all critical dimensions and materials
- Regularly updated to incorporate field experience and new material grades
- Mandatory third-party inspection and API monogram program ensure quality
Disadvantages
- More conservative (heavier) than ASME B16.34 minimum — higher cost and weight
- Does not cover ball, butterfly, or glob
